(W)HOLE in the Roof in Ethiopia has its roots in relationships. The friendship and bond between the Burke Family and Zebene Family has continued to grow and deepen since 2013. Through shared dreams and desires, both families seek to love others in real and tangible ways. In partnership, we discern needs, share stories, and inspire others to step into this growing community.
In this effort, you are invited to journey with us. For those with a heart filled with love… For those who desire relationships steeped in mutual compassion… For those willing to do the messy work of building community… For those looking to be inspired and to inspire others… there is a seat at the (W)HOLE table.
It’s at this table that we laugh, cry, dream, affirm, celebrate, discern, encourage, break bread, and live into loving others.
My name is Zebene and my wife’s name is Dr. Hiwot. We live in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. We will celebrate our 30 years marriage anniversary next year, January 17, 2023. We have five children, Josia, Levia, Nardos, Fares, and Barkot with the age of 27, 20, 18, 15, and 6 respectively.
The family has stated the Clinic work since eight years ago. It is opened with the aim of sharing the true love and compassion for the underprivileged families through providing them the required health care services through “Fares Medium Clinic.” The name is derived from our fourth child name Fares, which means “to break out” according to Genesis 38:29. So, the vision of the Clinic is to: Bring out a breakthrough in the health care service with love and compassion.
The main reason for the opening of the clinic is the existing health service gap that has been seen in the area, particularly in Goro square area, City of Addis Ababa. The area is known with low income group of people who cannot cover their health bill by themselves. The second reason is my wife’s dedication and compassion that she experienced in her long years health care profession. As she has been working in health care service for long years, she becomes much interested to keep going in giving people care and love in the health care service. Besides, all the kids are interested to aspire to continue their study in health education like their mom. Now the second son becomes a laboratory technician and works in the Clinic with his mom while others do yet their school to follow her. This all, therefore, becomes the case for how we start the Clinic.
Since it is started, the Clinic work has been supported by few friends who have good heart to share their love and desire to others. Burke family (Amanda and Kevin) and Mattingly Emmett family (Brenda and Vince) are mentioned here with honor as a pioneer. We knew each other about nine years ago while they came to Ethiopia for adoption purpose. Since the first day we met, we stated to build up a family friendship relations and made it growing to work together to reach others with love and concern through the emerged Clinic. So they became part of the vision of the Clinic and work on it to bring others to share their love through it. We are honor to say thank you all who shared us your love and keep support the Clinic to be sustained. Lisa Miller is another friend of us whom we never forget her true love and Clinic supplies she offered to the Clinic during opening time. We have also great honor for the Redeemer Lutheran Church and members who did a significant contribution for the Clinic work to be advanced.
In order to fulfill the goal of the Clinic work, we look for more friends who have good heart to work with us and reach others with love and desire. We need to see the Clinic to reach more unprivileged people not only with medical support, but also with economic and school material support especially for those school students.
We are also happy to see those medical teams who are interested to come with their medical knowledge and supplies and give medical treatment for those who are in need living around the Clinic.
Sincerely,
Zebene Shewakena
